The Grapes Of Wrath - Discussion - Joads
well when beginning the book I thought the Steinbeck would write the Joads like the common families of the time, meaning very poor and stuff
but throughout the book I saw that it was not so
they were actually better off than most other people
When people were pushed off their land, became poor, and had nothing left
The Joads actually had enough food to feed 2 extra people that suddenly showed up (Tom and Casey)
and then at the government camp you could see that while everybody else had almost nothing to eat, Ma Joad got her pot right out and made a stew
is their better for fortune going to last throughout the rest of the book
or are they also gonna fall down

oh yeah
and also
even though they had already 12 people going to California
they also decided to take Casey also
even though that means it'll be another mouth to feed
and then theres the Wilsons too
Credit
or they might be the lucky ones and all find jobs and live the "american dream" or something like that
:/
but krystal is probably right
well, throughout the book they kept pointing out that if you had food you couldnt let the person next to you go hungry and starve. it was a moral thing the joads were doing by sharing their supplies. "Do onto others as you would have them do onto you" thing. they understood those other peoples situations because it was the same as theirs. also, even through they did take on some extra mouths to feeds, noah left the family, the wilsons had to stay behind, connie ran away, and then casy went to jail for a while.
another place where it shows that not all people are hard hearted
is that one interchapter with Mae the convience story person
even though she could probably get into a lot of trouble
she still sold the candy WAY cheaper than she was suppose to just because she took pity on the children
alright, so i understand that the rich and fortunate are the ones being big meanies and taking advantage of the poor people, but i dont knwo why. are they just horrible people, do they truly not understand or sympathize for the workers, or do they just not care? or is it all of those? i dont understand how these people with everything they have can be so snobby and selfish with it when theres people out on their fields starving to death.
I think it might be just selfish interest
the people only cared about themselves
only wanted to make a profit and sustain themselves
they do not care about all the other people that they have to step on, to oppress, to dehumanize, as long as they get to their goal of what they want
